Professional Summary

Emeritus Professor Alan Lindsay provides consulting services to Australian and overseas universities and private higher education institutions on:
• Strategy and management
• Leadership and management development
• Quality assurance and improvement
• Institutional and course accreditation
• Academic program development, management, and review
• Organisation, governance, and performance of universities
• International and transnational education
• Managing staffing policies and profiles
• Aligning institutional and unit missions and operations.

He has also held a number of senior management positions, most recently as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic and Planning) at Monash University.

Prior to that, he was Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Higher Education Management at Macquarie University. Earlier leadership appointments at Macquarie included Chair of Academic Senate, Head of School of Education, Professorial Fellow in Education Policy, and Foundation Director of the Centre for Higher Education and Professional Development.

His long career in senior management involved portfolios with responsibility for institutional planning; academic policy; the University’s overall course profile; the development of flexible, open, distance learning; quality assurance and improvement; staffing policies; access and equity; and international development. He played a major role in the planning and strategic management of Monash’s global academic organisation and program. He was Chair, Transnational QA&I Committee which reviewed partner delivery in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China.

Professor Lindsay has extensive experience in quality audit and accreditation as chair and panel member for many Australian institutions. He has served as a panel member/chair for quality agencies in Hong Kong, New Zealand and Saudi Arabia. He is currently an AUQA panel chair and auditor, and has a senior role overseeing higher education registration and accreditation processes for the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority.

He has chaired academic boards and served on university councils. He has served on the Board of several companies including Open Universities Australia, Monash International, Monash College, Monash Commercial, and Macquarie Research.

Professor Lindsay has also served on numerous institutional and government committees, including the Australian Vice-Chancellors Committee advisory groups/committees relating to teaching and learning, quality, and equity; the Australian Government Department’s Advisory Group on the Learning and Teaching Performance Fund; and as chair of the Group of 8 Universities Deputy Vice-Chancellors’ (Academic) Group.

His research has been directed towards understanding the role of government in education; policy, organisation and governance; leadership and management development; the role, quality and performance of universities, strategic planning, and international and transnational education. He has an extensive national and international research record with around 100 publications on higher education policy and management.

Professor Lindsay’s teaching interests include leadership and management, and policy and planning, with a particular focus on universities. He has taught extensively in leadership and management courses for various sectors, including higher education, schools, and vocational education. He has developed and led undergraduate, graduate, and executive development courses relating to education and management. He developed and convened the innovative Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education Management in the Graduate School of Management at Macquarie University. He has led management development and QA programs for senior and middle level university staff in Australia, Asia and the Middle East.
